Dr. Sylvia Earle is a member of the world renowned Explorer's Club and is one of the world's most respected oceanographers and marine conservationists.  During this lecture, she will discuss her latest book,  The World is Blue: How Our Fate and the Oceans Are One.  Dr. Earle will highlight the latest research and show a short film.

Dr. Earle recieved her B.S. degree from Florida State University in 1955. While in Florida, Dr. Earle first learned scuba diving, and developed a fascination for all marine life and ecology. In 1956, she graduated with a Master's degree from Duke University. After starting a family, Dr. Earle participated in a six week National Science Foundation expedition in the Indian Ocean in 1964. In 1969, she recieved her Ph.D. from Duke where her dissertation, entitled Phaeophyta of the Eastern Gulf of Mexico focused on marine plant life. She has since dedicated her life to cataloging every species of plant in the Gulf.

Throughout her life, her work and scientific expeditions have taken her around the globe.  Dr. Earle is the recipient of numerous awards, and has accomplished many diving feats, including the first untethered sea-floor walk at a lower depth than any other human being before or since.

Dr. Earle also started the companies Deep Ocean Engineering and Deep Ocean Technologies, and has held several significant positions with a variety of organizations. Today she is Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic Society and led the Google Ocean Advisory Council, where she has worked with other scientists to provide scientific guidance and content for the "Ocean in Google Earth."

Dr. Earle was a recipient of the Academy's Richard Hopper Day Medal in 2004.

This program is co-sponsored by the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Explorer's Club and has been made possible through the generous support of the Silverman family.

The Center for Environmental Policy is made possible by the generous assistance of the William Penn Foundation and the Environmental Associates of the Academy.

Center for Environmental Policy

The goals of the Center for Environmental Policy (CEP) at The Academy of Natural Sciences are to evaluate key issues of environmental policy, facilitate dialogues and decision-making on environmental topics, and inform the public from both an academic as well as practical perspective.  The CEP will answer the need for a non-partisan, science-based organization that is capable of accessing and guiding a myriad of public and private stakeholders.
